Schnapsen is an Austrian ace-ten game of point tricks and marriages, which uses a ‘trick and draw’ mechanism of play. Points are earned by claiming valuable tricks and by declaring marriages held in hand. The aim is to be the first player to reach 66 points and thereby win the hand. Each hand consists of two phases. In phase one, players do not have to follow suit, while in phase two they do. There are two main forms of Schnapsen in Austria. There is ‘Soft’ Schnapsen and ‘Sharp’ Schnapsen. At Brisbane Cards, we play the slightly more challenging ‘sharp’ form of the game.
